Project Overview

Fibber Magees is an Irish Restaurant and Bar in Chandler, Arizona. As a school project I was tasked with redesigning their main menu and creating a secondary deliverable to go along with the menu.

Main Menu Redesign

There was nothing terribly wrong with the original menu. However, the design felt pretty busy, crowded, and outdated. Legibility was hampered by the tacky faux parchment background. The overall effect of the menu was of a kitschy theme restaurant. I wanted a redesign that felt more modern and upscale while being more legible and keeping the strong branding of the original.

I used the green and orange of the Irish flag as my color palette and increased the size of the logo to show off the intricate detail instead of hiding it in the corner. I also increased the margins and contrast to make the menu easier to read.

Drink Menu & Bar Games

As a child, I loved the games that came on kids’ menus. I thought it would be fun to make an adult version of those games.

The restaurant wants people to look at the drink menu because drinks are high margin items where they make most of their money. Usually this is accomplished by having a standalone drink menu on the table. By putting games on the drink special menu, I incentivize fun-loving restaurant patrons spending time with that menu.

Reflection & Takeaways

When you redesign something, I believe it’s important to not make changes for their own sake, but to be purposeful in every decision you make. In particular you should be careful not to alienate the current consumer base by needlessly abandoning branding that they have come to associate with a product they like.

My redesign of the main menu capitalized on the strong branding of the original while making significant gains in legibility. My drinks menu added a quirky flair that fits with the laid back brand that Fibber Magees cultivates while bringing valuable attention to their drink specials.
